SKLANSKY BUCKS: If there was no luck involved in poker...

... a whole lotta people would be millionaires, at least according to themselves. Having lost AA versus KK for the 7th consecutive time makes even the most composed players a little nuts. "I run so bad, it's unreal!" Heard that line before? Players may lose confidence, and may even decide to quit the great game of poker alltogether. Such a shame. The official definition of Sklansky Bucks is as follows:

"Sklansky bucks are theoretical money won or lost based on the Fundamental Theorem of Poker. The FTOP is discussed in The Theory of Poker.
Basically, if you lose a hand but your opponent made mistakes, such as drawing to a flush without proper pot odds, you may lose the pot but you have earned Sklansky bucks by causing your opponent to make a mistake.
On the flip side. If you are drawing without odds but you get luck and draw out on your opponent, you win the pot, but you lose Sklansky bucks."

So what? I'm still down "real" money, even though I was unlucky!
Well sure, but the whole concept of Sklansky Bucks is to boost your confidence: if you really got it in with the best cards all te time, then there is realy no reason to be upset. Poker is all about LONG TERM. If you're ALWAYS getting it in with the best hand, then you will be a winning player. If not now, then in the future. You're running bad now, but that's just a losing streak. The term "variance" is the most important factor here.

That's the question you have got to ask yourself. Sure you lost AK to JJ just now, but what about the time when you chased that draw against all odds, but managed to win?
